Wright Flyer III Sculpture on Clear Day, Wright Dunbar Historic District No. 6

The Story:      This sculpture was created by Larry Godwin from Brundidge, Alabama.  He created 4 variations that reside throughout the US.  This is the 1905 Wright Flyer III.  Before being displayed at the entrance of the Wright Dunbar Historic District in 2023, this sculpture stood on Monument Street overlooking RiverScape MetroPark.  On this perfect day in May, it proudly stands a block from where the Wright Brothers first formed the Wright Cycle Company.

The Rest of the Story:  When this Wright Flyer sculpture sat along Monument Street, it was part of Dayton’s inventors’ walk.  Its placement among other sculptures celebrating the Fraze Pull Tab or Ritty’s Incorruptible Cashier made great sense.  It also sat next to The Engineers Club of Dayton, so seeing it moved was hard to appreciate.  In fact, most Daytonians are not aware the Wright Flyer sculpture had been moved, however, its original location did not offer many unobstructed views.  Today, the stainless steel rendition of the Wright Flyer III proudly stands along 3rd Street a block from the Wright Cycle Company Complex.
