History of Kettering Rocks!
Kettering Rocks! – Stone Sculptures That Shaped a City
Through the leadership of the City of Kettering Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department, Kettering has cultivated a meaningful public art presence through its CitySites Permanent Collection. Much of that collection began with the 2002 International Stone Sculpting Exposition held at Delco Park… an event known as Kettering Rocks! Artists from around the world transformed raw stone into enduring works that now anchor parks and civic spaces throughout the city.
These sculptures were not temporary displays. They became part of Kettering’s identity… blending art, landscape, and community into a lasting outdoor gallery.
Kettering Artwork and Locations
The Kettering Rocks! and CitySites pieces reside in several prominent parks and civic locations:
- Kettering Lincoln Civic Commons: Untitled by Keizo Ushio; Memorial for 9/11 by John Van Alstine; Song and Dance by Barry Gunderson.
- Polen Farm: The Interior Animal by Erika Inger.
- Delco Park: Rock Waves by Anno Seiberts.
- Indian Riffle: Whack, Whack, Paddy Whack by Dale Johnson; Untitled by Velislav Minekov; Inner View by Carolina Ramersdorfer.
- Governor’s Place: Terrestrial Formation by Irma Ortega Perez.
Each piece interacts differently with its surroundings… stone against sky, metal against trees, sculpture reflected in water. By gathering them here, this gallery offers a unified view while maintaining their original park URLs and context.
Kettering Art Prints for Healthcare Facilities
Nearly every one of these sculptures now appears as fine art prints in medical clinics, healthcare corridors, and patient rooms throughout the Miami Valley. Their familiar forms offer comfort and recognition… subtle reminders of home during important moments.
By photographing these works under thoughtful light—early morning glow, soft overcast skies, or vivid autumn color—I aim to preserve both the artistry of the sculpture and the spirit of its setting. For businesses and healthcare facilities, these prints celebrate Kettering’s creativity while reinforcing pride in the community they serve.
