University of Dayton History

The University of Dayton is a private Marianist Catholic College in Dayton, Ohio.  The history of the University of Dayton is deeply rooted in the principles of faith, service, and education.  UD is also the second-largest private university in Ohio.  Established in the mid-19th century, it began as a day school for young men aspiring to become priests.  Over time, the university expanded its academic offerings and became coeducational in 1977, fostering an inclusive and diverse environment.

The University of Dayton Arena serves as a hub for basketball enthusiasts and stands as a testament to the community's love for sports and athletic excellence.  Capturing the energy and fervor during a game or the architectural grandness of the arena's exterior can result in dynamic and evocative images.  Today, the University of Dayton Arena frequently hosts many basketball events including the UD Flyers and the NCAA Tournament 16.  

University of Dayton Architectural Marvels and Landmarks

  • Chapel of the Immaculate Conception: The university’s Chapel of the Immaculate Conception has a blue bell tower that serves as the school’s icon which hosted its first mass in 1850.
  • Campus Landscaping: The campus grounds, adorned with landscaped lawns, courtyards, and tree-lined walkways, offer diverse settings for fine art photography.  The changing seasons provide a canvas of colors, from the vibrant blooms of spring to the fiery foliage of autumn.
  • University of Dayton Arena: The UD Arena has a seating capacity of 13,409 and opened in 1969.  The arena has hosted more men's NCAA Division I basketball tournament games than any other venue.
