Polen Farm – A Historic Kettering Landmark
The property known today as Polen Farm (5099 Bigger Road) began in 1854 when Joseph Bigger established what he called White Oak Farm. His grandfather, also Joseph Bigger, served in the Revolutionary War and later moved to Montgomery County, claiming land for his service. The farm remained in the Bigger family until 1940, when Cora Bigger Walcut sold the property to Russell V. Polen, a General Motors and Frigidaire executive.
During his ownership, Polen expanded the estate by acquiring additional acreage and restoring the historic barn, preserving its agricultural character while enhancing its grounds. Following his passing, the property transferred to the City of Kettering in 1979. In 1996, the city carefully renovated the site, shaping it into the elegant community venue it is today.
Polen Farm Features
Operated by the Kettering Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department, Polen Farm blends historic architecture with mature trees and landscaped grounds.
- Polen Farmhouse: The original home of Joseph and Mary LaFever Bigger now serves as an event venue and park office, framed by seasonal flowerbeds and stately trees.
- Polen Farm Barn: Built alongside the farmhouse in 1854, the restored barn provides a warm reception space for ceremonies and celebrations.
- Gazebo: Set among towering trees, the gazebo anchors weddings and family gatherings, offering a peaceful focal point for milestone moments.
Throughout spring blossoms, summer greenery, autumn color, and winter stillness, the farm’s architecture and landscape offer enduring compositions.
Kettering Fine Art Photography of Polen Farm
Polen Farm stands as one of Kettering’s most recognizable historic properties. Its farmhouse, barn, and gazebo evoke both early settlement history and modern celebrations. I’ve photographed this venue under soft morning light, golden autumn evenings, and quiet seasonal transitions… capturing a sense of heritage and belonging.
These art prints are well suited for homes, hospitality spaces, and professional offices that wish to reflect Kettering’s character. If you would like to explore more Kettering Ohio artwork, visit these galleries:
