Recent History of Hocking Hills

The recent history of Hocking Hills State Park dates back to the early 20th century.  In 1924, the State of Ohio purchased its first parcel of land in Hocking County, which included the iconic Old Man’s Cave.  Over the years, additional land was acquired, and significant improvements were made during the 1930s by the Works Progress Administration, including the construction of trails, stone steps, bridges, and tunnels.  By 1949, these areas were officially designated as Hocking Hills State Park.
