Logan County was established in 1817, named after General Benjamin Logan, a prominent figure in Ohio's early history.  General Logan was known for his role in the Northwest Indian War and his efforts to secure the region for settlement.  The county's formation was part of the broader westward expansion during the early 19th century, as settlers moved into the fertile lands of the Ohio Territory.

The county's geography, shaped by glacial activity thousands of years ago, features rolling hills, fertile plains, and lush forests.  The Mad River, one of Ohio's most scenic waterways, flows through the county, contributing to its agricultural richness and natural beauty.  Over time, Logan County grew into a thriving community, with small towns and villages that reflect the character and resilience of its people.

Landmarks That Define Logan County

Logan County is home to several landmarks that capture the essence of its history and natural splendor.

  • Indian Lake State Park:   Originally created as a feeder lake for the Miami and Erie Canal, Indian Lake has since become a popular destination for boating, fishing, and outdoor recreation.
  • Piatt Castles:   A pair of historic homes built by brothers Donn and Abram Piatt in the mid-19th century. These castles, designed in a mix of Gothic and Romanesque styles, are a testament to the region's architectural heritage.
  • Ohio Caverns:   Known as "America's Most Colorful Caverns," this underground marvel features stunning crystal formations and intricate passageways carved by ancient underground rivers.
