The town now called Jim Thorpe was originally Mauch Chunk, a historic Carbon County community tied to the Lehigh River, coal, railroads, and Pennsylvania’s early industrial landscape. After Jim Thorpe’s death in 1953, the boroughs of Mauch Chunk and East Mauch Chunk merged and renamed the community Jim Thorpe in 1954. That decision created a lasting memorial but also a complicated legacy, since Thorpe was from Oklahoma and did not live in the town during his lifetime. His surviving relatives and the Sac and Fox Nation have long objected to the location of his remains, making the story both historically notable and personally sensitive.
