Aullwood Garden MetroPark

Nestled next to the Stillwater River, Aullwood Garden MetroPark is a hidden gem that offers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. This enchanting garden, with its lush landscapes and exquisite floral displays, not only pays tribute to its founder, Maria Aull, but also serves as a source of inspiration for healthcare fine art, using garden scenes to promote healing and well-being.

Maria Aull: A Visionary Steward of Nature

Aullwood Garden MetroPark owes its existence to the vision and dedication of Marie Aull, a remarkable woman who had a deep passion for nature and its preservation. Maria Aull, a botanist and environmentalist, acquired the land in 1956 and transformed it into the breathtaking garden we know today. Her commitment to conservation and horticulture laid the foundation for this peaceful oasis.

History of Aullwood Garden

In 1977, she donated her property to the Five Rivers MetroParks and continued to care for her garden and live on the property until 2002.  Her husband, John Aull, purchased the property near the Stillwater River in 1907.  They spent decades planting flowers that populate the forest floor around their cabin.  Every year, the woodlands spring to life with daffodils, Virginia Bluebells, and lilies.  The surrounding grounds offer over a dozen gardens, flowerbeds, and landscaped lawns.  The beautiful home now resides on the National Register of Historic Places.

Gardenscape Photography

One of the most striking features of Aullwood Garden MetroPark is its stunning array of gardenscapes. Each section of the park boasts unique floral displays, providing visitors with a sensory feast. Here are some of the highlights:

  1. The Butterfly House: Aullwood's Butterfly House is a haven for these colorful creatures. Visitors can witness the delicate dance of butterflies amidst vibrant blooms, creating a symphony of colors and fragrances.

  2. The Pond Garden: This tranquil oasis is adorned with water lilies, lotus blossoms, and a variety of aquatic plants. The reflective surface of the pond mirrors the surrounding flora, creating a picture-perfect scene.

  3. The Native Plant Garden: Designed to showcase Ohio's native flora, this garden is a living testament to Maria Aull's commitment to conservation. It's an ideal spot for those looking to learn more about the region's indigenous plant species.

  4. The Woodland Garden: Stroll through the shaded pathways of the Woodland Garden, where rhododendrons, azaleas, and other shade-loving plants flourish. It's a peaceful retreat that invites contemplation.

Healthcare Fine Art and Healing Gardens

Gardens like Aullwood have a unique power to heal and rejuvenate. Healthcare fine art often incorporates garden scenes to harness this therapeutic potential. The idea is to bring the calming and restorative essence of nature into healthcare settings, such as hospitals, clinics, and long-term care facilities.

1. Stress Reduction: Garden scenes in healthcare fine art help reduce stress and anxiety among patients and their families. The calming effect of nature aids in the healing process and creates a soothing atmosphere.

2. Distraction and Positive Distraction: Gardenscapes provide a pleasant distraction from medical procedures and discomfort, offering patients a respite from their worries. This can positively impact their mental and emotional well-being.

3. Connection to Nature: For individuals who are unable to access outdoor gardens, healthcare fine art featuring garden scenes allows them to maintain a connection with nature, even when confined indoors.

4. Promoting Well-being: Gardens inspire hope and optimism. Art depicting beautiful garden settings fosters a sense of well-being and promotes a positive outlook among patients, which can aid in their recovery.

Aullwood Garden MetroPark, a tribute to Maria Aull's love for nature, not only enchants visitors with its captivating gardenscapes but also serves as a testament to the healing power of the natural world. As we appreciate the beauty and tranquility of this remarkable garden, we're reminded of how healthcare fine art harnesses the therapeutic potential of garden scenes to promote healing and well-being, bringing a touch of nature's serenity into the lives of those who need it most. Aullwood Garden MetroPark stands as a testament to the enduring connection between nature, art, and healing.
