Urbana

Formation and Growth of Urbana, Ohio

Urbana, Ohio was founded in 1805 by Colonel William Ward who was a veteran of the American Revolution and Northwest Indian War.  In agreement with Joseph C. Vance, they formed Urbana.  How the city was named Urbana is unclear.  One proposal entails use of the Latin work “urbs” for city.  Perhaps Mr. Ward drew the name from the word Urbanity, while others claim its inspired by Urbanna, Virginia.

Regardless, its growth is tied to several aspects, likes it location to the fertile Ohio flatlands that attracted early settlers, mainly of European descent, who relied on agriculture as their primary livelihood.  The development of the Mad River and Lake Erie Railroad in the mid-19th century further accelerated Urbana’s growth.

Today, Urbana Ohio serves as the county seat of Champaign County and serves as the burial ground of Ohio explorer, Indian fighter and patriot, Simon Kenton.  Another famous son is John Quincy Adams Ward (grandson of Urbana Ohio founder Colonel William Ward).  Both are memorialized in the Oakdale Cemetery.
