Indian Hunter: John Quincy Adams Ward Headstone No. 2

The Story:      John Quincy Adams Ward was an American Sculptor with many popular works.  He was born in Urbana (Champaign County) Ohio. A year later he moved to New York City and studied under Henry Kirke Brown.  In 1866, his first sculpture (Indian Hunter) was placed in New York’s Central Park which became the park’s first sculpture created by an American Artist.  After he passed, his family buried him in Urbana, Ohio, and commissioned a replica of Indian Hunter for his headstone.  The work depicts a Native American hunter, bow in hand, restraining his snarling hunting dog.
