The Story: Exploring Confederate Avenue at Gettysburg National Military Park on an autumn morning, I found the former battleground void of visitors. I dwelled in the park for a couple of hours before I saw another person. The Virginia Battle Monument off in the distance depicts a mounted General Lee studying the Union Lines. In the foreground lies a battery of 12-pounder Napoleon canons which were used on both sides. On this fall day, the morning light illuminated the oak trees revealing their vivid reddish orange hues.
