Jim Thorpe Memorial No. 3
The Story: Jim Thorpe Pennsylvania lies within Carbon County and was originally founded as Mauch Chunk. The town changed its name as it merged with a second town in 1954 and was elected to honor the talented sportsmen and Olympian. Jim Thorpe attended Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania before winning Olympic gold medals in the 1912 pentathlon, even after someone stole his shoes at the games. He also played in Major League Baseball and in the National Football League. Upon his passing, his wife interred his remains in a monument in this park which carries his name.
