Kiser Lake State Park
The History and Formation of Kiser Lake State Park: A Brief Overview
This part of Ohio was flattened by Ice Age glaciers. As the glaciers retreated, stalled and retreated more, the end moraines formed a series of lower ridges and valleys. Over time, the gently rolling hills and small creeks defined the area. In 1840, a dam was built over Mosquito Creek near St Paris Ohio. For a while, the stored water powered a mill before the mill and dam fell into disrepair. The foundations of Kiser Lake State Park were laid in 1932 when John W. Kiser and his family donated several hundred acres of land in the Mosquito Creek Valley to the State of Ohio. Their dream was to create a beautiful lake in the area. In 1938, construction started on another dam and by 1940, the lake began filling. Today, Kiser Lake is nearly 2.5 miles in length, spans 394 acres and has 5.3 miles of shoreline.
Kiser Lake State Park Features:
- Kiser Lake: The 531-acre state park includes the 396-acre Kiser Lake, which the park is named after. The entire park provides opportunities for fishing, kayaking, and canoeing in its 531 acres.
- Kiser Lake Wetlands State Nature Preserve: This area was formed when blocks of ice broke away from the glacier and became covered by sand and gravel. As the climate warmed, the ice melted and left a depression filled with water surrounded by glacial deposits. These areas are filled with many intriguing plants including pitcher plant, sundew, tamarack and spruce.
