Early History of Wapakoneta

Wapakoneta has a history rich in hosting Native Americans.  The Miami and Wyandot called the village home before moving westward.  Then Shawnee moved in, building a council house where Wapakoneta sits today.  Blue Jacket, Tecumseh, Little Turtle, Peter Cornstalk and Captain Logan were Shawnee living in the settlement.  The Shawnee settled the area about 1780s and called "Waughpaughkonnetta" possibly meaning the place of white bones.  Wapakoneta was platted in a 1833 and became the county seat of Auglaize County in 1848.
