Canyonlands National Park

The Formation of Canyonlands National Park

Canyonlands National Park, established in 1964, showcases a stunning display of geological history that spans hundreds of millions of years.  Its deep history started with the ancient oceans, rivers, and deserts which covered the region.  The sand deposits became compressed forming the reddish Navajo Sandstone.  Twenty million years ago, with the tectonic uplift of the Colorado Plateau, the erosional forces of the Colorado and Green Rivers gave the park its distinctive landscape of canyons, mesas, and buttes.  Today, the park is a photographer's paradise where fine art photography immortalizes the memories of your visit.

Major Attractions in Canyonlands

Canyonlands is divided into distinct districts, each offering unique landscapes and attractions:

  • Island in the Sky:  This easily accessible district is perfect for visitors of all ages and skill levels. The views from the numerous overlooks are nothing short of spectacular. Don’t miss the famous Mesa Arch, especially at sunrise when its arch frames the rising sun in a glorious display of colors.
  • The Needles:  For those seeking adventure, the Needles district offers a myriad of hiking trails, canyoneering, and rock-climbing opportunities. The rugged landscape is home to striking spire formations created from sandstone, a favorite among photographers and outdoor enthusiasts alike.
  • The Maze:  The Maze is a remote and rugged area best suited for experienced adventurers. This district is known for its complex network of canyons and is a labyrinthine playground for those looking to escape the crowds and immerse themselves in the solitude of nature.
