Foggy Osage Orange Tunnel No. 3

The Story:      Within Sugarcreek MetroPark near Bellbrook, Ohio, lies this natural wonder, the Osage Orange Tunnel. Before barbwire fences were available, farmers would plant rows of Osage Orange Trees that became natural fence lines. On this foggy, autumn morning, the arched branches offered hikers moody views of this unique living tunnel.

The Rest of the Story:  I’ve previously explored this park on sunny fall mornings and evenings.  On this morning walk, the thick still air added to the mood.  For this print, I wanted to explore using the Orton Effect which was named after Michael Orton where the scene takes on a dreamy effect.  Historically, this was done by blending images which entailed a slight out-of-focus blend.   In all, what is bright is typically overly bright and has a slightly soft focus.

Accolades:

  • 2022 the 32nd annual Dayton-area Works on Paper exhibition, Rosewood Gallery, Kettering, Ohio.   One of Two Juried prints (54 accepted) from 200 submissions.  This print won an award and serves as the exhibit’s featured print.
  • 2024 a client shared she was contemplating buying a painting of a wooded pathway.  In fact, she was regretting not making that purchase, when she discovered one of my Sugarcreek MetroPark posts on social media.  She’s a frequent park visitor and was fond of walking through Dayton’s tree tunnel.   For her, she was able to blend the aesthetics of a forest footpath with a park that she cherishes.
