Charles Young National Monument No. 1

The Story:     Charles Young was born into slavery, but his father led his family to Ripley, Ohio via the Underground Railroad. Through semi-integrated schools, he impressed teachers. Starting with stellar entrance test results, he was the third African-American to graduate West Point. Served as a Buffalo Soldier in the Indian Wars, then the Spanish-American War and later mentored ROTC cadets at Wilberforce College where this structure served as his home. He later fought Poncho Villa Forces, retired as a Colonel and was posthumously promoted to Brigadier General in 2022.
