Blue Hole, Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve
The Story: Clifton Gorge formed as the Wisconsin Glacier started melting 18,000 years ago. As the Little Miami River cut through cracks in the erosion-resistant dolomite layers, it finally reaches the softer shale layers below where the river expands. This expansion allows the river to reach a calm energy state, thereby creating a peaceful pool of water called the Blue Hole. On this spring day, the trees lining the gorge begin to populate their canopies with new leaves as the pool narrows for the next drop in elevation.
