Patterson Monument in Fall
The Story: In the midst of Hills and Dales MetroPark, Kettering, Ohio resides a monument to one of Dayton’s famous citizens, John Henry Patterson. This monument was created by Guiseppe Moretti in 1928 and was 35 feet high and 55 feet long and exhibits the sculpture’s Beaux-Arts style. Patterson was an industrialist (created NCR (National Cash Register)), but he made significant impacts in many other ways like fostering the safety and health of employees, organizing Dayton’s response to the flood, and a host of charitable measures. The central portion of the monument consists of a bronze sculpture of Patterson sitting on a horse facing left while the horse rests on all four hooves. Additionally, the monument consists of bronze left and right groups. The left group represents Patterson’s industry and education pursuits with a man standing next to a large geared wheel and a woman kneeling while reading a book. The right group depicts progress and prosperity and consists of a man with a cornucopia and globe and another man kneeling while holding a torch and looking skyward.
