History of Great Council State Park
Great Council State Park is Ohio’s newest state park, established to honor the Shawnee people and the historic Chillicothe settlement that once stood along the Little Miami River. Before statehood… before frontier expansion… this floodplain served as one of several Shawnee communities known as Chillicothe.
The name “Chillicothe” referred not to a single permanent town but to a moving political center of the Shawnee. This location became one of the most significant in Ohio’s early history and is closely associated with Tecumseh, the Shawnee leader who sought to unify Native nations in defense of their homelands.
Today, the park blends interpretive history with sweeping natural views. From the elevated grounds, visitors look across the same floodplain that once supported Shawnee life… a landscape shaped by river, season, and time.

Fine Art Photography of Great Council State Park
Great Council State Park imagery carries both landscape and legacy. The floodplain light at sunrise and sunset reveals the quiet strength of the land… while the Tecumseh sculpture stands as a reminder of leadership, resilience, and cultural memory.
These images resonate particularly well in educational spaces, professional offices, and healthcare environments where meaningful, place-based artwork matters. The tones are grounded. The compositions steady. The subject timeless.
For those who value Greene County’s deeper history… this gallery offers artwork that honors both land and legacy.
