West Virginia State Route 20 thru New River Gorge National Park No. 2
The Story: While chasing waterfalls in West Virginia, my journey took me through Barbour County. On this perfect autumn day, the Mountaineer Highway gently meandered through the vibrant fall colors.
Rest of the Story: I love chasing country roads. Exploring those peaceful scenes brings back feelings of nostalgia, perhaps aided by a John Denver song planning in the background. There’s nothing new about curvy roads, but as a photographer from Ohio, our roads tend to run north-south or east-west. For me, I find the composition compelling, begging the viewer to ponder about what wonderful scenes is just around the next bend in the road.

As West Virginia Route 20 follows the New River Gorge, it follows the mountain’s profile through a series of graceful curves. As it run abeam the Sandstone Falls Overlook, these perfect serpentine curves compelled me to pull over. For me, this scene is reminiscent of state’s anthem, “Take Me Home, Country Roads”.
