US 89A along Vermilion Cliffs National Monument No. 1
The Story: As US 89A crosses northern Arizona it skirts the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument leading travelers through the beautiful remoteness of the West. The red sandstones of the Paria Plateau on the right formed during the Triassic and Jurassic periods. The roadway was designated US 89 until 1959 when the Glen Canyon Dam diverted traffic. Today, US 89A is known as the Fredonia–Vermilion Cliffs Scenic Route which was designated as a scenic highway in 1996.
