Gateway Arch National Park Art Prints and Mississippi River Sunsets

Gateway Arch National Park art prints featuring the St. Louis skyline, Mississippi River sunsets, winter ice, dramatic skies, and one of my most recognized photographs from the eastern side of the river.  Formerly known as Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, Gateway Arch National Park preserves the Gateway Arch, the Old Courthouse, and the story of westward expansion along the Mississippi River.  The Arch itself was designed by Eero Saarinen, completed in 1965, and remains one of the most recognizable landmarks in the United States.

My connection to this scene is personal. After retiring from the U.S. Air Force, I remained in O’Fallon, Illinois, for a couple of years while my daughters finished high school.  With more time to explore photography, I often traveled to the East St. Louis bank of the Mississippi River, where the Arch, skyline, river, and evening sky aligned in a way that helped me practice shooting directly into the light.  I was still early in that learning curve when I captured a fiery winter sunset over the Gateway Arch as blocks of ice floated down the Mississippi River... the image later selected by the U.S. Postal Service for its Mighty Mississippi stamp series.

Gateway Arch National Park Landmarks and St. Louis Scenes

  • Gateway Arch:   The 630-foot stainless steel monument rises above the St. Louis riverfront, creating a bold and graceful landmark that changes dramatically with the light, weather, and color of the sky.
  • Mississippi River:   Flowing below the Arch, the river adds reflection, movement, history, and atmosphere to skyline compositions, especially at sunset and during rare winter ice events.
  • St Louis Skyline:   From the Illinois side of the river, the skyline and Arch come together in layered compositions where architecture, water, and sky define the scene.
  • East St. Louis Riverfront View:   My favored vantage point was across the river on the Illinois side, where the Arch, skyline, river, and sunset could be composed together in a broader landscape view.
  • Old Courthouse:    Part of Gateway Arch National Park, the Old Courthouse adds historical depth to the park’s story and connects the riverfront landscape to St. Louis civic history.
  • Jefferson National Expansion Memorial:   The former name of the park remains an important part of its history, reflecting the earlier memorial designation associated with westward expansion and the national story told along the St. Louis riverfront.

Gateway Arch Photography and Learning to Shoot Into the Light

The Gateway Arch became one of the places where I truly began to understand the challenge and reward of photographing directly into sunset light.  The scene often pushed the limits of the camera. If the exposure protected the colorful sky, the foreground and skyline could fall into darkness.  If the exposure favored the city, the sky could lose the intensity that made the moment special. Working from the Illinois side of the river gave me room to study the light, the reflections, the skyline, and the changing color of the clouds.  That experience became part of the foundation for the way I approach dramatic skies, water reflections, and high-dynamic-range landscape scenes today.
