The Black Brigade of Cincinnati Monument No. 2
The Story: The Black Brigade of Cincinnati was a military unit of African-American soldiers, organized in the defense of Cincinnati from Confederate forces. In 1862 with Confederate Troops occupying pro-slavery Kentucky, Cincinnati Police tried forcing black males into service for the construction of fortifications. After a city outcry over black mistreatment, a volunteer unit was formed called the Black Brigade led by William M. Dickson. This monument overlooking the Ohio River celebrates the unit and its accomplishments in service to Cincinnati and the US Army. A key sculpture in the park memorialized a Black Brigade member presenting Judge Dickson with an engraved sword as the unit disbanded.
