Foggy Sunrise over Morris Reserve No. 3
The Story: A fog hangs over Morris Reserve, near Bellbrook, Ohio. This park once served as farmland, but it was converted over to a tallgrass prairie a few years ago. According to artifacts found on the farm, we know that since the last ice age, five native peoples have called this land home. On this summer morning, the footpath leads visitors past the grey-head coneflowers (Ratibida pinnata) and wild bergamot (Monarda fistulosa).
The Rest of the Story: Morris Reserve (3151 Lower Bellbrook Rd, Spring Valley, OH) lies a few thousand feet from my home. The park occupies lower-level lands which run along the Little Miami River, so morning fog occurs can be a regular occurrence. Highlighting the special status of this river, the US Congress designated The Little Miami River as a National Wild and Scenic River in 1968. The formation of Morris Reserve as a park would take another 50 years. With the tall grass prairie established a couple of years later, the Bellbrook-Sugarcreek Part District created formal trails through the 178-acre park, thereby creating this peaceful morning sunrise.
