The Story: William H. Pitsenbarger was born in Piqua Ohio, became an Air Force pararescueman, and died serving his country in a heroic feat saving and defending the lives of 60 men on the jungle floor of Vietnam. This singular act led to the posthumous award of the Air Force Cross which was later upgraded to the Medal of Honor. Hollywood recently immortalized his life and sacrifice in a movie called “The Last Full Measure”. In 2015 and after several years of fundraising, the Friends of the Piqua Parks installed a life-size, bronze sculpture of William Pitsenbarger at the entrance of Pitsenbarger Park and Sports Complex.
