Memphis Belle at National Museum of the US Air Force
The Story: This B-17F Flying Fortress serves as a source of American pride when so many bomber crews lost their lives over Europe in WWII. When this crew of the Memphis Belle completed their 25th mission the aircraft and crew were sent back to the US to bolster the war bond drive effort. Eventually, the city of Memphis obtained the aircraft in 1946 where it sat outside at a National Guard armory where it suffered from souvenir hunters, vandalism, and mother nature. In 2005, the Air Force took possession of the bomber and commenced a significant restoration effort. In 2018, the Memphis Belle was unveiled on the 75th anniversary of its 25th mission. Today, it’s displayed in an elevated flying position with its bomb doors open.
