Hocking Hills Rock House
The Story: Recent glacial erosion carved 330 million-year-old sandstone into imaginative nooks, grottos, and caves, making the heavily forested Hocking Hills a favorite spot for Ohio visitors. With the burial of the massive and ancient Teays River, the receding glacial meltwater created conditions which also forged a new river. In southeast Ohio, the erosional waters worked the soft sandstone into Hocking Hills’ unique geological features, such as the Rock House captured in this image. The surrounding forest and cave walls blocked most of the natural light while visitors simultaneously occupied many portals of this favorite spot. As a result, this image is an HDR blend of many images taken within 10 minutes, correctly exposed for its available light as tourists emptied one section to explore another.
