Glade Creek Grist Mill in Autumn No. 17

The Story:      A popular spot in West Virginia’s Babcock State Park lies in the Glade Creek Grist Mill.  As with much of the area, milling on this site ceased in the 1950s.  Fortunately, the West Virginia rebuilt this mill in 1976 using parts from other nearby grist mills giving this nostalgic structure its ancient feel.  A long exposure accentuated the silkiness of the waterfall while dreary overhead clouds magnified the surrounding autumn colors.

The Rest of the Story:  It was my intent to visit West Virginia during peak autumn color.  Due to factors beyond my control, I had to delay my trip by two weeks beyond the peak fall forecast.   True to form, there were vast vistas which had already dropped their leaves confirming the forecast’s accuracy.  When I arrived at the Glade Creek Grist Mill, I was pleasantly surprised by the rich autumn leaves still clinging to the surrounding trees.  Perhaps it was the small valley that sheltered the trees from the frost conditions that impacted the more exposed and larger valleys.   In another bit of fortune, I also normally shoot under blue skies, but this trip consisted of hard rains and low hanging clouds which clung to the ridge tops.   The rains had also chased off many of the tourists who might normally have frequented the park.  For me, I already knew there is something magical about the dreary flat light that make the fall colors really pop.  In all, the print captures the beautiful experience if you were in the park on this peaceful evening.

In addition to this print being listed in Fayette County, West Virginia, I’ve also listed it under my nostalgic structures gallery.  This gallery features scenes of yesteryear like water-powered grist mills, so check out my nostalgic mill art prints.
