Frozen Ash Cave, Hocking Hills State Park

The Story:     Hocking Hills State Park near Logan, Ohio, offers many iconic sights including Ash Cave. Since the last ice age, a small creek has been eroding the Black Hand Sandstone forming a large recessed cave. A creek flows over the top rock which resists erosion, creating a waterfall flowing from the top of the dome. On this day, cold temperatures fostered the creation of an ice stalagmite forming on the floor of the sandy cave.
