Autumn Sunburst thru Deeds Carillon No. 1
The Story: As fall colors take to the Miami Valley, I always relish a trip to Carillon Historical Park. At peak color, the surrounding trees seemed to gain their own illumination. During this mid-morning trip, the autumn reds and oranges formed complementary colors with the blue skies and green grass as light diffraction produced a sun star through the Deeds Carillon.
The Rest of the Story: In short, I love the contre-jour approach to photography. Contre-jour is French for “against the daylight”. For years, I would point my camera towards the light only to be disappointed with the results of my film camera. Today I shoot with Canon’s professional bodies as well as their fantastic EF 11-24mm F4 Ultra Wide Zoom. At just under $3,000, it has nine aperture blades, and when stopped down to a pinhole, produces fascinating sun stars. I do this so often, that the resulting sun star has become a sort of trademark of my work. For me, with the lens gathering light from 126 degrees, I found the sun would invariably be in the frame. Rather than fight the issue, I chose to embrace the challenge by driving light diffraction onto my camera’s sensor.
