Badlands National Park is a place where weather, geology, and open country come together in a dramatic way. I arrived in early evening after driving the length of South Dakota beneath pretty summer skies, but as I pushed farther west, towering cumulonimbus clouds began to build overhead.  That weather turned out to be a gift.  The air was clear, the light breaking around the storms was golden, the sunlit clouds glowed brilliantly white, and the darker storm bases added a sense of drama above the rugged land.  I explored the park with care, moving between overlooks and prairie scenes while watching the storm light change across the Badlands.
