Stevenson Road Covered Bridge on Perfect Summer Day No. 14
The Story: Greene County, Ohio offers many awesome parks and peaceful spots. One includes a series of covered bridges that represent the county’s pride of its nostalgic structures. The Stevenson Road Covered Bridge was built in 1877 by the Smith Bridge Company (Smith Truss style). Amazingly, the bridge supported traffic until 2003. With a state grant and county funds, the bridge opened again in 2015 where it still spans Massies Creek, northeast of Xenia. On this perfect summer day, the Stevenson Road covered bridge basks under blue skies while serving as another Ohio covered bridge.
The Rest of the Story: According to the Greene County Historical Society post in 2011, our county had 23 covered bridges in 1940. By 1953, the number dropped to 17. Today, we have five left. According to Portland Bolt and Manufacturing Company who supplied the restoration hardware, the bridge was restored for $650,000, by 2015.
The Smith Bridge Co was owned by Robert W. Smith, of Tipp City, Ohio. After receiving his patent, he moved this business to Toledo, Ohio. In building his bridges, they were first fitted together in Toledo, then disassembled and transported to the site, where a carpenter would assemble the bridge in its final location. Though Mr Smith had many designs, his criss crossed beams were a well-known design.
