James A. Garfield Memorial No. 1
The Story: Ohio served as home to many presidents including our 20th, James A. Garfield, and first lady Lucretia. With his assassination in 1881, the Nation mourned as they did 16 years earlier for Lincoln. This memorial employs Ohio sandstone with carved reliefs depicting scenes from Garfield’s life. Inside, stands a 12-foot statue of Garfield carved from Carrara marble. The president and first lady lie in the crypt below the statue.
