Dayton VA Chaplain Thomas B. Van Horne Memorial Wet Garden
The Story: The Grotto Gardens at the Dayton VA Medical Center is an impressive display of gardening, landscaping and patriotism. The Dayton Grotto Gardens was created in 1867 following President Lincoln’s declaration that our nation will build three facilities to care for Civil War soldiers. In 1900, the gardens were declared prettier than NYC Central Park. As the veteran population waned, the gardens were forgotten and overgrown until 2012 when volunteers sought to do something better. Today, these grounds hold several gardens which win gardening awards while showing the Miami Valley’s patriotism.
