Castle Knoll in the Morning Light No. 9
The Story: Castle Knoll is an old mansion that resides on a hill that overlooks Springfield, Ohio. The home was built in 1881 by industrialist and Springfield Mayor, Phineas P. Mast. He hired Lon Krider and Charles Cregar to build a home that was inspired by an Italian castle. The stonework required 29 Italian emigrants and Dayton’s finest woodworker. After the passing of Mast, the building became a retirement and nursing home for the Grand Lodge Knights of Pythias of Ohio. Today, the Turner Foundation has preserved the home from demolition, and where it represents one of the most important works of the aesthetic movement.
