The Story: Initially built as a monument, to Civil War Veterans, the 100-foot-tall Butler County Soldiers Monument, has shaped the Hamilton, Ohio, skyline since 1899. Standing on top of the structure is a 17-foot tall bronze soldier called Billy Yank (aka Victory, the Jewel of the Soul) whose right foot rest on a replica unexploded shell. On this evening and under blue skies, the setting sun paints the monument and sculpture in golden light.
