Ambrose A. Winters Monument No. 2
The Story: This was dedicated to Ambrose A. Winters who was a Dayton lawyer credited with rallying support for much of Dayton’s early streetscape infrastructure. It was originally placed on the site of the old Dayton Library but was removed and placed in storage for 50 years. In 2013, Dayton completed the Patterson Boulevard Canal Parkway Project, which celebrates Dayton’s canal history while enhancing pedestrian access to revitalized downtown features. While installing new sculptures and historical markers, city planners thought it was appropriate to re-install this monument at the eastern edge of Cooper Park and the new Dayton Library, greeting pedestrians on the new Canal Parkway. The monument originally possessed a drinking fountain, so with its re-dedication, city planners replaced the fountain parts with a new stone panel.
