2nd Tier of Elakala Falls in Autumn No. 6
The Story: Shay’s Run in Blackwater Falls State Park flows over four waterfalls. Named after a Massawomee Indian warrior, named Elakala the falls form timeless and picturesque waterscapes. This peaceful scene captures the second tier of Elakala Falls where the water runs over sandstone layers and around water-worn boulders. On this autumn evening, the golden-colored leaves contrast with the green moss-covered rocks.
The Rest of the Story: This was my first visit to Blackwater Falls State Park. Fall color maps indicated that my trip was past peak color. Although the leaves were past peak in the broad open valleys, I found in deeper gorges were full of prime autumn color. Also, this quiet scene left me literally looking skyward. The rocks at the right of the falls were wet and surprisingly slick. A miscalculated step left me laying on $13,000 of camera gear and an advocate for the padding in my Mindshift Camera bag If you’d like to see more waterfalls, be sure to see my gallery of waterfall art prints.
