Peterson Park Log Home, Cedarville, Ohio in Winter No. 2
The Story: This early Ohio log home was almost inadvertently lost to history. It was discovered during the demolition of a house that was being torn down by Greene County Park District. In 2015, the district restored the home while solving its mystery. The original logs dated to 1814 but no structure was listed at this site until 1870. Further research reveals that Samuel R. Heathcock dismantled a house “log by log” from a site seven miles away in Clark County and re-assembled it on the site in Cedarville Township. This account solves the mystery of how 1814 logs in a house style of pre-1825 don’t show up on the tax records until the 1870s. On this winter day, the restored home resides at the entrance of Peterson Park, west of Cedarville Ohio.
