Leo, the Steele Lion No. 1

The Story:      The sculptor, Anna Vaugh Hyatt, modeled this lion from sketches of a black lion named “Sultan” from the Bronx Zoo at the turn of the 19th century. With $300 in nickels from Steele High School students, the artist went to Naples Italy to supervise its 1907 casting as the new mascot. The school proudly placed the sculpture outside their school at the corner of Main and Monument in 1909. The infamous 1913 flood destroyed the sculpture’s pedestal knocking the lion to the ground. Undeterred, the school rebuilt the monument a year later. With the school closed, the Dayton Board of Education loaned the mascot to the Dayton Art Institute in 1955 where it now watches over the Dayton Skyline.
