George Rogers Clark Statue

The Story:      In the heart of Springfield, Ohio, lies this bronze statue of George Rogers Clark, the Namesake of Clark County. Due to British and Indian attacks, on 8 Aug 1780, George Rogers Clark led a force of 1,000 Kentucky Militia to engage the British-led Shawnee at the Village of Peckuwe (6 miles west of this spot). The battle was the largest Revolutionary War Battle fought west of the Alleghenies and his victory led to the diminished British presence in the west. This statue was sculpted by Mike Major, funded by the Ruth and Carleton Davison Trust, and presented to the city of Springfield on 30 Aug 2001.
