History of Fort Ancient Earthworks

Fort Ancient stands as one of the most remarkable prehistoric sites in North America. Built more than 2,000 years ago by the Hopewell culture, the earthworks form a vast hilltop enclosure stretching nearly three and a half miles along the bluffs above the Little Miami River.

Despite its name, Fort Ancient was not constructed as a military fortification. Archaeologists now understand the site as a ceremonial landscape where ancient peoples gathered for social, cultural, and spiritual purposes. The carefully constructed earthen walls follow the contours of the ridge, enclosing sacred space while offering expansive views across the surrounding river valley.

In 2023, Fort Ancient became part of the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognizing the global importance of these ancient engineering achievements.

Today the site is preserved as a state memorial and museum complex where visitors can walk the grounds, explore interpretive exhibits, and experience one of Ohio’s most profound connections to its ancient past.
